If they land in your back pocket they will cause a fire there. Did some directed energy weapon hit you in the ASSSS? These are random event chance happenings which occur in every fire.

Also, the tree, if you notice, was sitting just on top or near a water pipe system, so it's not really a huge chance it was dry. I also looked at the area where the wind was blowing from, and if those in the car would have witnessed any other fire (it was just at the beginning of their journey) they would have stated it. Oh one final point - grass don't light up roots and the fire was shooting out of this plant's roots which are the most condensed with water.
