Because if you do, and if your executive branch assures in secrecy that it can dismiss the legislative and judiciary branches decisions, YOU DO NOT LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY ANYMORE.
I agree the term democracy might seems problematic, but we are fighting a war on the awareness of people, and this is the only way we can explain to people in a way they will understand what is going on.
We are so blessed that we are the generation which is here to decide whether or not humanity will live in a technological dystopian world.
Ehden, I think I might disagree with you.... but it may only be on the use of the term "democracy." It seems to me that you are holding democracy up to an impossibly high standard as the perfect form of government that is being betrayed by people that were elected through a democratic system.... Can you see where I'm going with this?
Democracy is mob rule. It has no inherent respect human rights. The mob can vote to tax the minority. The mob can vote to vaccinate the minority. Hell, the mob can vote to enslave the minority.
The totalitarian state we are suffering through isn't leaders betraying our democracies... This is a natural result of democracy. These leaders were elected democratically. The mob is forcing it's will on the minority.
We, as a collective, knowingly elected the people doing this to us. "We" wanted it.
We must focus on inalienable human rights. Democracy can work, but only if there are ground rules. In the USA, we had these ground rules in the form of a constitution, and the intentional gridlock built into our form of government protected the constitution from democracy. Unfortunately, modern technology has enabled democracy to overpower human rights.... We need to find a way to move past democracy and return power to individuals.
I know that people in the US talk about the republic vs democracy. As an Aussie, I respect your Bill of Rights, and your Constitution. However, it doesn't seem to have protected you from this shitshow. In Australia, we too have a Constitution that should be able to protect us from government over-reach - yet they have so far managed to find a way to circumvent the Constitution (and it is not just the past 2 years - it's been going on for decades, if not longer - since at least the Lima Declaration in the 70s).
Right now, our government has blatantly shown their disdain for the independence of the judiciary by overturning the court decision about allowing the tennis player Novak to stay in Australia for the Open. The Pfizer contracts are just another (though very significant & major) aspect of this over-reach.
In all of our countries, the worse it gets, the more people will wake up and see what is happening (hopefully). So at least we might have some good out of the gathering darkness.

Finally we have something that can unite around.
